The Barons started the season on the road in Kincardine on Saturday, September 17th. Despite a few regular faces out of the lineup due to prior family commitments (captain Tyson Lina, Dylan Richardson, and newly acquired defenceman Cam Angst from the Listowel Cyclones), the Hanover Barons seemed to shoot out of a canon, out shooting their opponent 11-2 in the first period and scoring first with a 1-0 lead. It was a power play goal scored by assistant captain Jonah White. Assists going to Payton McIsaac and Ryan Colquhoun at 12:04.
However, the second period wasn’t as explosive as the first. While Hanover seemed to slightly let off the gas, both teams traded chances all period. Hanover scored at 13:58 (Jonah White from Ryan Goetz and Chris Ferri). Kincardine answered back one minute later (goal scored by Meulensteen from Servais). By the end of the 3rd, Kincardine had evened up the score 2-2 (goal scored by Gibbons from Downs and MacKinnon at 1:26), and the Barons were being out shot by Kincardine 14-3.
Overtime started a little slow, with each team feeling each other out 3-on-3. However, with the second shift out and 1:03 into the frame, the hero Curtis Arnold broke away from his check and went down the ice, depositing the game winner over the Bulldogs netminder (Garvie). The Barons were victorious in their season debut, 3-2 in OT. Honorable mention goes out to Riley McCabe for his stellar play in net as he proved how he will be the backbone to this team this season.
Great win Boys! Good luck in your season Home Opener tonight, Friday, September 23rd 8:00pm at the P&H Centre against the Goderich Flyers.
